Up to this point at the 2016 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, the outstanding player is undoubtedly Jason Mercier.
He’s won two Championship bracelets and been heads-up in a third, he's leading the Player of the Year race by a mile and he's undoubtedly proved he's a brilliant player.
But even he gets lucky sometimes, too.
Only the Greats Make it Here
Among poker players, the $10k HORSE Championship is one of the highest-rated tournaments of the whole series. Only great all-round players can make it here as there are five different games to be played.
On the final day of this one there were 14 players left fighting for the bracelet and one of them is Mercier, on an incredible run over the previous week.
First, he won the $10k Lowball Championship. Then, just two days later, he missed a back-to-back win in the Razz event by exactly one spot.
Just as in the other tournaments Mercier came to the table as the chipleader, but this time he started to slip and lost a lot of chips.
Problem ...? What Problem?
Just as Mercier started struggling, fortune stepped in and showered him with enough luck to get out of the hole.
It’s Limit Hold’em and with the usual air of boredom around him, he raises pre-flop. He then barrels all three streets and gets called by Russian player Mikhail Semin all the way.
On the river Mercier shows the monster and is on the way to his next bracelet. At the end of the day, he was the last man sitting and put on another one of these coveted arm rings.
