Poker Video of the Week: When the Nuts is No Longer the Nuts

Do you remember the NBC Heads-up Championship? The made-for-TV tournament where top pros and celebrities went and played poker without taking it too seriously?

Mike Matusow won the last edition of this event when it ran in 2013, beating his personal friend Phil Hellmuth in the final.

Before that, though, there were plenty of interesting and exciting matches.

In the Round of 16 former November Niner Joseph Cheong and Eugene Katchalov played for a spot in the quarter final.

It was former PokerStars pro Katchalov who went through in the end but there was a crucial point in the match where things could have gone the other way.

In our video of the week it's Katchalov who gets hit hard by the board but Cheong who ends up with the nuts.

Dream Flop

Eugene gets a strong hand but decides to refrain from a raise against his aggressive opponent, giving him a cheap flop.

It's a move that pays off immediately as Katchalov hits the nut flush. Even better, Cheong hits top pair including a flush draw so he won’t back down to a single bet.

Things are looking great for Katchalov ... but then disaster strikes.

Two Perfect Cards for Cheong

The jack on the turn gives Katchalov a little bit to worry about, but it’s no reason to expect the worst. He lets Cheong go for it, and go for it he does.

The four on the river seems harmless so Katchalov repeats his move and lets Cheong bet first.

But when he goes for the check-raise he’s in for a surprise as Cheong moves all-in rather quickly.

Katchalov eventually finds a fold. Afterwards, he even manages to smile about it - even if his smile isn’t quite as big as Cheong’s.
